How to Nail Your First Ever Job Interview

Congratulations! You bagged your first ever interview! Brilliant job on creating a resume that stood out from the rest and amazed the employer! You’ve impressed them with your stellar experience, and now, you’ve piqued their interest to find out if you are who you say you are! So, all you’ve got to do is convince them that they can’t find anyone better than you for the job! Sounds simple enough.

But wait, you must be thinking that this sounds easier said than done at this point, aren't you? Nah, truth be told, it’s not as intimidating as you think. In fact, we’re pretty sure that if you follow these simple tips, you’ll wow your employer and nail the interview!

Research, Research…and more Research

That’s right! The first thing you need to do is learn about the company. Do your research. Find out whatever you can about them; where they are, what they do, how they operate, and so on. Familiarize yourself with the company, take your time to go through their website, take a look at their social media page (If they have one) and try to gauge their work culture and current focus. A simple search can also take you to review sites, where employers have anonymously written about the work environment, and this could really come in handy!

Remember to prepare a few key selling points about yourself that the interviewer should know, such as what makes you the best fit for the position, certain unique skill sets, or characteristics you possess that are sure to stand out and impress. An example to illustrate each point can make the interview engaging as well. Don’t worry if you think you don’t have anything to tell the interviewer, the point is to show them how much this job means to you, and you can do that in other ways as well. Explain to them why you want the job, what it offers that you find valuable, and prepare several questions in advance that you want to ask them. Showing that you’ve done your fair share of research is sure to keep you in their good books!

Dress to impress!

You must have heard the saying that confidence is the best outfit for an interview, and that is true…to an extent. We’re pretty sure that if you walk-in to an interview wearing your pyjamas, no amount of confidence can get you that job! Your attire should be professional, yet comfortable. Also, you don’t want to wear anything too revealing, tight, or uncomfortable. You may end up unconsciously fiddling with it throughout the interview; and that’s a big no.

Eyebrows speak better than words!

Create a great first impression that makes people raise their eyebrows in appreciation and awe, rather than disapproval. Imagine that the moment you enter the organization is the moment that your interview begins! Greet everyone with a polite smile and an affable demeanour. From people who shared the lift, receptionist, to the ones who walk by you, they’re all your potential future employer, and co-workers. You can never get a second chance at a first impression, so make this one count. It’s all about walking with confidence, making eye contact, a firm handshake, and maintaining a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and interest around you.

Be Yourself…the others are already taken!

Probably the most important tip here you need to follow; be yourself! After all, the only person with that qualification is you! The need to impress and the fear of disappointing makes us do crazy things that can go horribly wrong, especially in interviews. There’s a huge misconception that you need to have the answers to all the questions in an interview, which is the farthest from the truth. The interviewer doesn’t need all your answers to be right, they just want you to be truthful and genuine. If you don’t know the answer to a question, just say that upfront and with a smile on your face instead of trying to make things up. If the interviewer figures out that you aren't being sincere, you could make a bad first impression.

If you’re worried that your nervousness might hinder the interview process, then try small talk. It’s the best way to build rapport, break the ice, and calm your nerves. Make a mental note of a few topics that you can effortlessly use to start a conversation that could lead to a valuable and effective working relationship! Here’s a tip: Make sure the topics you come up with are something you know about, so that you can keep the conversation flowing smoothly.

All eyes on you as you walk out that door

The interview isn't over when the interviewer says it’s done. The way you carry yourself when concluding the interview matters too. Smile, shake their hands, thank them for their time, and wish them a good day as you leave. Walk out of the interview confidently, with your head held high and your heart filled with joy. Also, Let the interviewer know that they can reach out to you if any additional questions arise. This shows that you're serious about this job.

Hurray! The interview is over! You’re back home, and the interview behind you; done and dusted...Right? No! Like a delectable dessert to end a sumptuous meal, send the interviewer a thank you mail. Let them know how much you appreciate their time and that you’re eager to look forward to their response.

Now that you have learned how to master your interview, wipe those worry lines away and prepare for history to be made!
